I have been editing books for many years, and I can say that I have never come across anything quite like Religion of Macho. The author very clearly shows how Christianity and Biblical narrative structure secular culture and politics: secular notions of social causality and morally problematized objects are derived from Christianity. In addition, he shows that males naturally function at high levels of aggression unless cultural ideals dictate otherwise. Men are naturally inclined to "go ape."
I see very clearly in public the dynamics he describes. This book has changed my experience of the world and has allowed me to perceive it with greater depth and unity. One academic has described Religion of Macho as "revolutionary," and I am inclined to agree. I would like to see this book in print. I believe that it would forward the Western project of understanding the human condition instead of remaining subject to religion. Blind people are very sedate because they do not perceive that their emotions are condoned and promoted by their peers. Sighted people, on the other hand, are more animated because they do perceive that their emotions are condoned and enforced by their peers. Similarly, White and Asian populations around the world are sedate because they have experienced a history of crushing religious prohibitions against the emotions. This is in strong contrast to African populations, who, through smiles and gestures, promote the emotions in general, such as love and happiness, but also the values of anger and criminal aggression. During the 1950s and 1960s, there was racial integration in America. Like a blind person suddenly given sight, Whites and Asians started to imagine, for the first time, an included and vivid African population as peers. Whites and Asians started to feel a promotion and enforcement of their own emotions, which resulted in higher crime rates during the years of American civil rights legislation: especially 1957, 1964, and 1968. (See below for a sample of crime data.)
The Left is structured by a redistribution of Christian theological dynamics. Leftists lament, "How the Blacks and Trees suffer for the sins of Whites!" Today, Whites achieve redemption by accepting Blacks and their own guilt. As Christians were once empowered by accepting Jesus, and so were worthy of dominating others, today Leftists feel empowered by the Trees and the Blacks, and so deserve to dominate. The Left is so righteous. In animal behavior, this is called "dependent rank." As Whites wanted to fight for God, they now want to fight for the Trees and Blacks. As Whites formerly understood the wrath of God, which resulted from their own disobedience, so today they understand the wrath of Blacks and feel compelled to obey their new masters to achieve atonement. There is a clear dominance hierarchy comprising the Left, with Whites smiling at Blacks to appease and atone. As Whites were once concerned about the atoning progress of Jesus in their lives, now they are concerned about the atoning progress of Trees and Blacks. Thus, the Left is"progressive" and what could be more progressive than integration?

The day would be a day like few others. The actions of two men would make it almost immortal. It would be a day that would live for millennia, and even brings the years together. Of our two men, one was nicely dressed, and he decided to take a walk through the Alps. As I see the high quality of his walking stick and clothing, it is clear that he is a man of high status. I now see the second man come up behind the well-dressed man. The approaching man stops some distance back. He takes out a lethal weapon and fires at the walking man. His aim is good. The victim falls to the ground, too wounded to get help. He dies there. This dynamic duo is not Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty. Such a scene occurs around the world every hour of every day of every year. Although I did not observe the events that led up to this particular killing, the motive is fairly predictable. The deceased and the killer most likely had conflicting opinions about their respective social status. The killer felt that he had been denied higher status in his own eyes or that of the community. He may have been verbally insulted or denigrated, which typically results in an intolerable loss of face. Men in this situation often, in a grand and heroic manner, attack and kill to regain their sense of "dignity." Our killer "hero" may have been denied material goods, or religious status, or power in the community. Or the conflict between the two men may have been over a female. Or the motive may have even been something so trivial as a robbery.
These motives of physical dominance and heroism flesh out acts of murder or physical heroics across America, the world, and among many tribal groups. (The words heroics and murder will be used here as synonyms because of their common motive, and because they have been interchangeable since Homer.) The common denominator among these acts of dominance is power. Men act heroically in order to acquire power or dominance over other men, or members of the community. They even act to earn public esteem. Men commonly want to be seen as dominant by their peers, as the "big cheese" or "the big man on campus" to translate the psychology of male dominance into more docile, or modern middle-class terms.
With acts of heroism so numerous and predictable, why should the day of our alpine death last for millennia? This particular death occurred about six thousand years ago, and the victim's body was frozen by ice, allowing it to be preserved until its discovery about fifteen years ago. He is now affectionately referred to as the Ice Man. Investigators discovered that the body had an arrow wound in his side that never healed. He succumbed to an act of heroism not during hand-to-hand combat, but by some type of covert act. The hero wanted only death, and had no desire to prove heroism in open combat.
The desire for open combat motivates many men to fight-they like the challenge, the opportunity to be a hero, to show off or win glory, like macho Achilles. A famous actress said that when men kill in film, it is "sorta cool." Like heroes in literature, men today often vaunt after a successful kill. Glory earned through heroic killing allows men to rise in social status among many groups in the world. Men today who have this kind of gender performance identity often have an intense physical energy commonly called "macho." Men also pursue the sadistic pleasure of slowly wearing a man down before delivering the fatal blow. In any event, our alpine heroism was intentional, and it was a triumph for our hero.
Heroes are not confined to the Neolithic: male aspirations have not changed a bit in the intervening six thousand years. Even a brief tour of a video arcade will show blood lust very much in evidence. Men and boys still want to earn points or glory, and revenge is sweet. Seeing a picture of the Ice Man with his unhealed arrow wound is similar to looking at a photograph of Humphry Bogard arm-and-arm with Ingrid Bergman: you know the rest of the story. There is most definitely a Platonic form of heroism.
A similar reason for the immortal status of our unfortunate man is his geographical distance from, say, New Orleans, the murder or heroism capital of the United States. Apparently there're right in Berkeley, we do live in One World. If there is strength in numbers, we should have no problem figuring out the origin of the universal motives of heroism and some of its delightful modern trends. Though, regarding modern heroics, the Neolithic is not so new as to be after John Wayne or Clint Eastwood, Smith and Wesson, the Pentagon, Twinkes, Christopher Columbus, Apartheid, or even Teddy Roosevelt's charge up San Juan Hill. So clearly, none of these modern boogies will be much help in determining the reason for the permanent drop in temperature for our near-permanent alpine dweller. So what do the inhabitants of the Neolithic and New Orleans have in common? The body. A classic example of the vigorous male body, or vigorous male heroism comes from Homer's Iliad, during Hector's famous soliloquy where he challenges the Greeks to a fight. He says:
I'll speak out what the heart inside me urges... Let one whose nerve impels him to fight with me come striding from your lines, a lone champion pitted against Prince Hector. If I kill him and Apollo grants me glory [then, after he is buried, people will look at his burial mound, and say,] "There's the mound of a man who died in the old days, one of the brave whom glorious Hector killed." [When no Greek accepts Hector's challenge, Menelaus, outraged, says, referring to his Greek solders] "Oh no-your threats, your bluster-women, not men of [Greece]! What disgrace it will be-shame, cringing shame if not one [Greek] now steps up to battle Hector. Look at each of you, sitting there, lifeless, lust for glory gone.[1]
Apparently men are more excited at the thought of a heroic victory than a heroic death. There is a similar example from Roman literature. In Virgil's poem The Aeneid, Aenias thinks about killing Helen, but decides against it because killing a woman brings no glory. In both of these examples, biologically based states of emotion and emotional drives are frequently referred to and are the primary currency of the interaction between the men. This is particularly clear when men's native strength is compared to women's native weakness-"women, not men of Greece!" We shall later see this emotion driven reasoning again when we review the nature of male heroics today. It today compels men to triumph and glory over one another. This will be a multicultural study of male heroics. So the body and its basic impulses shall be our bridge connecting us to the past, and it shall be a Luxury yacht moving us with ease from continent to continent, from people to people around the world, and between people who have the same basic power aspiration as our Alpine, Trojan and barroom dweller. Now that we have completed our survey of heroics before gunpowder and colonialism, we shall begin in earnest our historical and cross-cultural study of heroics, and some of its most recent exciting trends. The Northern Hemisphere saw large increases in heroism during the 1950s and 1960s. The first important clue regarding the cause of the increases comes from the number of heroic acts themselves recorded by the police. Increases in heroics occurred during the years of American Black civil rights legislation or racial integration. The crime graphs below represent the large increases in crime that occurred around the world in those years:

The crime graphs vividly illustrate how American racial integration caused large increases in crime not only among Whites in the West, but among people around the world. In Hong Kong, rape increased 2,000% and robbery increased 4,000%. In India, about 13,000 people are murdered every year above the pre-1964 rates. In Norway, rape increased 1,700%. Many other countries have increases this large. These are huge increases in crime. Some of the best American professors have confirmed this crime data. Of course, it is obvious to the naked eye. The graphs above represent only a small sample of the countries affected. Over thirty countries have been impacted. Well over a billion people have been raped, killed, injured, and robbed. So we are clearly in the middle of a cultural "world war." A highly regarded professor at the University of California has confirmed that the world today in general still has the high crime rates that began in those years. Thus, this crime data does not have to be brought up to the present day. Notice that the data for India extends to 1997. We shall review evidence that the increases were caused by the relatively wimpy or docile Northern Hemisphere populations, such as the Buddhists and Christians, adapting themselves to a new peer or "brotherly" relationship with the high interpersonal heroics of African groups-not Black Americans but Africans. African rates of heroism are about twenty times higher than most Buddhist, Hindu and Christian rates.[2] Notice that many of the increases occurred during 1957, several years before the rise of the 1960s' counter culture. The 1957 and 1964 increases are the essential ones. The correlations are extremely large, so both correlation and causality are apparent to the naked eye-just like light from the sun. No one has to believe that there is a causal relation between integration and the increased heroics, because one can simply observe that there is a causal relation. Observation and reproducibility are important parts of the scientific method. So, the fact of causality and its policy implications take priority over any theory. The long-term increases in crime have been huge. Listed below is a summary of the total increases in crime victims. These huge amounts of crime are occurring now.

In the United States every year, compared to the 1950s, there are an extra 9.5 million more White murders, rapes, assaults, and property crimes. Of this 9.5 million, 1.3 million are violent crimes against people.
In Canada every year, compared to the 1950s, there are an extra 2.5 million murders, rapes, assaults, and robberies.
In England and Scotland every year, there are over 5 million more murders, rapes, assaults, and robberies. This increase excludes those crimes committed by aliens.
In France every year, there are an extra 3 million murders, rapes, assaults, and robberies. There are about 800 extra murders every year. In addition, there are about 20,000 more rapes and sex offenses. (France has experienced a 9,600% increase in crime.)
In Germany every year, there are an extra 4 million murders, rapes, assaults, and robberies. There are an extra 1,400 murders every year. And there are 20,000 more sex offenses. (Germany has experienced a 700% increase in crime.)
In Scandinavia every year, there are an extra 2.5 million murders, rapes, assaults, and robberies. Every year there are an extra 800 murders. (Scandinavia has experienced a 3,000% increase in crime.)
Let's look closely at Norway. In 1960, it had about 3,900 crimes. In the year 2000, there were 455,000 crimes. Almost all of the extra crime was committed by native Norwegians. While this increase for Norway is somewhat larger than average, this is about what the numbers look like for the entire world.
In Australia and New Zealand every year, there are an extra 2 million murders, rapes, assaults, and robberies.
In all of Europe every year, there are an extra 23 million murders, rapes, assaults, and robberies.
Thus, in Europe during the next ten years, there will be 230 million more murders, rapes, assaults, and robberies. Even during the five years of World War II, only 50 million people died.
The total increase in the Western world for murder, rape, assault, and robbery is about 37 million every year, compared to the 1950s. Let's see what this figure looks like:

So every day in the West, there are 100,000 more murders, rapes, assaults, and robberies.
In Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Singapore, there are an extra 2.3 million murders, rapes, assaults, and robberies every year. These countries had an average increase of 450% by the year 2000.
In Latin America, there are 3 million more crimes per year.
In India, there are an extra 5.6 million murders, rapes, assaults, and robberies. This represents an increase of 1,500%.
The total increased crime for the entire industrialized world and the Third World is a whopping 82 million every year. So during the next ten years, there will be over half a billion more crime victims in the world.
There is nothing more effective than attacking humanity from the inside out. It should be noted that there are only 38 million Blacks living in the United States. In addition, non-Whites make up only about 7% of England's population. One thing that the crime data illustrate is a huge degradation in values. The Whites and Asians are becoming more grasping. They are being assimilated to the Blacks, Arabs, and lower-class Latinos.

It is a common observation today that the nineteenth century was obsessive. Of course, it could also be said that we, today, are obsessive. The secular New Left simply obsesses over different things than that of nineteenth-century fundamentalist Christianity. The objects are different, but the energy or perspective is the same. We shall see examples of the New Left's structures of emotions and how they are the same as those of the nineteenth century. The emotions of today are simply attached to different objects. This makes the left look superficially different from Christianity. The fundamental psychological continuity is that of negotiating the degree of distance or closeness, respect and disrespect, to God. I shall try to show that the secular New Left is actually a religion, a religion of macho.
The New Left is formed by a redistribution of Christian theology and Biblical narrative. More specifically, the dominance hierarchy of nineteenth-century Biblical Christianity turned into the dominance hierarchy of the New Left. The names or objects are different, but what remain are the emotional tone or vocabulary and the psychological power relationships. Centrally, the New Left retains the vivid notions of sin, suffering, righteous anger, redemption, and atonement through history via appropriate laws. For instance, "How the Trees, Whales, and Blacks suffer for the sins of Whites!" the Leftists protest with a fevered certainty. There is nothing more agonizing for a Leftist than to imagine the harpooning of a whale, the hacking of a tree, or the stigmatizing of a Black. This is the source of the "bleeding heart" in the bleeding heart liberal. The Left is very particular about what should be accorded honor and respect.
These notions of sin and its negative consequences are the automatic moral and intellectual reasoning in popular and academic culture. For instance, during an interview, a lower-class, middle-aged Black man described the troubles of a Black boy, concluding his descriptions with the observation, "He's my little Jesus." And Marcus Wesson was a Black man who was arrested for murdering his family. He reported that he was Jesus and that the police were Satan.[3] Apparently, passion in these proportions is too impressive to stay inside the Bible, and it can be used to other, empowering purposes here on Earth. Whites now give their respect to the Blacks instead of God. In addition, the Left has developed an iconography to help raise Whites' consciousness of their sinful transgressions. In a music video by Madonna, a Black man is portrayed as standing on a pedestal, wearing a crown of thorns and appropriate clothing, with Madonna kneeling at his feet in sorrow. This convenient use of imagery certainly gets people's attention today and raises the consciousness of Whites. Similarly, in the recent film Bruce Almighty, a Black male actor plays "God." Of course, in history, the Whites fell away from the Blacks.
Because of this outrage or original sin of hubris from the Whites, the Blacks, among others, have a righteous anger, which the smiling Leftists fall all over themselves to appease in different ways, including with gifts. The usual Leftist rhetoric begins by describing the original sin or hubris. It then moves to strategies of respect, appeasement, redemption, and atonement. For instance, the Whites appease the wrath of the Blacks and achieve redemption by accepting the Blacks into their own lives: "What! You haven't accepted the Blacks into your life!" and then, "You better watch out: they're not appeased!" the Whites exclaim scornfully today.
The wrath of the Blacks is clearly modeled on that of Jesus. In the Sistine Chapel, there is Michelangelo's fresco entitled, "The Last Judgment," which centrally includes "Christ the Judge," complete with raised arm. He certainly has a righteous anger. His raised arm is sign of his authority. So we see that today the Left is fired by the vision of a series of angry Christ types, and desperately desires appeasement, redemption, and atonement. Of course, the Whites' cowering admission of guilt is another important way of appeasing the wrath and achieving redemption. "It's all our fault!" and "The Blacks are worthy of respect!" most Whites exclaim. And then, now that the Blacks are happy, "What a relief!" Their anger has been appeased. As is obvious today, the Blacks deserve reparations for the sins of Whites. If Whites reject the blame, most Blacks start to bristle. This rejection implies that the Blacks are unworthy of esteem, acceptance, and love. This theology of self-humiliation today clearly defines the Whites' relations with other groups. As Whites were sensitive to the sufferings of Jesus, White college students now attend "sensitivity training" to learn about the sufferings of the Blacks. Whites cannot be hubristic before the Trees and Blacks. These are the divinities that have to be accorded honor. For instance, regarding Black actor Will Smith, a White actress said, "No one criticizes him." He is accorded high honor. (Some Whites become votaries of whales or women, but for this summary I will focus on the Trees and the Blacks.)There is a strong symptom of the Whites' transgression against honor. It is a fact that the Whites ultimately suffer by the hands of the sins themselves-as in Hieronymus Bosch's "The Garden of Earthly Delights." In the famous medieval painting, a glutton is depicted as being devoured by a huge stomach on legs, a sodomite is impaled by a Demon bird, and a musician is tortured by his harp. In the same way, today's Whites erode the ozone layer, so they suffer. They cut down the trees, so they suffer. And Blacks attack Whites because of the sins of the Whites! Whites suffer by the hands of the sins themselves, their own hubris. This reasoning is sometimes present in classical mythology, as in the story of Neoptolemus, who commits homicide at an altar and then is himself killed at an altar. During the mid-twentieth century, the Hays film censorship code required that sinners suffer for their sins.
The Blacks themselves have noticed this shift in the attitudes of Whites. For instance, the Black author Akil published a recent book entitled From Niggers to God. Certainly, the Blacks are much angrier today than they were in the first half of the twentieth century, and this delights Whites' erotic and moral senses. "We want to work to make you happy!" the Whites joyfully exclaim today. The ancient Greek definition of divinity was, that which is worthy of reverence. Today, it is common for Leftists to ultimately defer to the threat of violence from the Blacks to earn the Whites' sympathies. The Blacks are certainly worthy of reverence. (This tactic of emotional manipulation is not confined to humans. Dogs sometimes walk with an artificial limp when they want sympathy or when they want to appeal to the altruistic impulse.)
During the 1960s the Blacks and the Left used violence in order to sink their roots. They established a pattern of threat. Or, they drew a line that Whites and academics could not cross without danger.
The nineteenth century was gripped by remorse in response to the thoughts of sin and of joyful visions of redemption. Today, the Leftist is first overcome with remorse, and then relieved by the vision of redemption, atonement, or reunion with the Blacks. More specifically, when a Leftist contemplates the past, the age of sin, with its hubristic and divisive alienation from God-when Blacks were stigmatized as "niggers"-he is flooded with remorse. But then his eyes light up when he contemplates the future, which holds the promise of redemption and atonement if we can just get it right today-if we can just legislate the right path back to the Blacks. During the 1960s, the cry went up, "Come thou, redeemer of our race!" (the title of a Bach chorale). This explains why the Whites have to tippy-toe around Washington, DC, these days. The Whites always have to make sure that they and the Blacks are pointed in the right direction. "Are you conscious of your sins? Do you have sensitivity and consciousness?" the Whites urgently ask one another.
If one proposes something that gets in the way of that narrative of redemption, watch out! "Divisive!" the Leftist scowls. If one shows that the righteous anger is just a contemptible, excluded, and exploding piece of meat, watch out! "You're unredeemed, evil, and still in your sins: death!" the Leftist threatens. This really hurts them. This explains why it doesn't take much to get a Leftist gasping.
Leftists have such strong emotions because they feel they are being denied a position of power within the divine hierarchy-that they are cut off in a cold universe. Science and evolutionary psychology term this "dependent rank." This is a behavioral category that involves increasing one's rank by associating oneself with a higher-ranking or more physically powerful individual. This relationship is present in both religion and the New Left in the latter's relationship with the almighty Victim. Hence, Leftists want atonement, they want to get closer, to feel "with it."
So we see that for Whites today, having fallen away through some sin of hubris in history-"You thug!" they sneered-the goal is to restore an empowering position via dependent rank-or, in other words, to achieve a worshipful atonement with the powerful images. Tree and macho worship were the norm among pagan Germanic peoples, and today, it is almost impossible to get a White to stop appeasing or smiling at and bowing down before a Tree or a Black. (Among Chimpanzees, smiling has an appeasing effect.[4])
For both religion and the Left, a worshipful subordination is essential for redemption and empowerment. As the just fear of God was once an essential virtue, today the Whites' just fear of the Blacks and Trees is an essential virtue. There is certainly no shortage of finger wagging from Leftists. This is necessary for you to get connected and to have your consciousness raised. For instance, in the recent film Like Mike, a Black boy jumps, leapfrog fashion, over a White boy. (Chimpanzee behavior expresses dominance in this same fashion.[5])
It is common today for environmentalists to describe with despair the anthropocentrism of the past. "We must be humble or worshipful if we are to achieve atonement and salvation!" as the environmentalist conjures up fearful images of the apocalypse or punishment complete with the raised arm. If a White says, with a sneer, "Cut down all the Trees!" every nerve in the body of the Leftist starts popping. Life becomes barren. In American film today, a popular theme is that of animals taking revenge on humans. So a White had better be humble and fearful around a Black, as Akil and the film Like Mike make very clear. This is the path of empowering salvation or sanctification for the Whites. There's nothing more disappointing for a White person than to see a Black man drained of all charismatic macho: nothing to be awed and empowered by. Stone-age cave art offers important hints as how to interpret the Left. Among the San Bushmen tribe of southern Africa, they interpret the picture of a dying bull as a symbol of fertility.[6]
The people imagine dancing around the dying bull, and his power is transferred to the people during the dance. Similarly, in Christianity, first Christ dies, and then his power is transferred to people who have a focus on him. This is illustrated by the text of a Bach cantata: "Jesus, they Passion is my purest joy, They wounds, crown, and scorn are my heart's green pasture; My soul steps down a rosy path When I think thereon;"[7]
There is the same situation with the Left today. First Whites tell stories of how the Blacks suffer and die, and then those Whites get in on the power of Black macho. Of course, devotion is required of the San, Christians, and the modern Left.
From the centuries of practice of being enslaved to Christ, the Whites now rejoice in the present relationship, or vision of Black macho or dominance. And, of course, the Trees are tall. An advertisement for a museum exhibition on the Black singer Paul Robeson had the phrase, "The Tallest Tree in Our Forrest" accompanied by a picture of Paul Robeson surrounded by shorter White people. Certainly Blacks are dominant today, and everyone loves it. Of course, a White can become an expert slave by going into "social work." He or she is then really with it. In ancient Rome, slaves would sometime take on the name Philotyrannos, or "lover of tyranny". Similarly, Whites today re-express their masochism by being lovers of tyranny. As a White wanted to chain herself to Jesus, she now wants to chain herself to a Tree or a Black. No doubt about it: she's sanctified. I have observed that social workers do indeed have halos as they float down the street. And there is something profoundly redeeming or sanctifying about a White woman becoming a bride of Christ. A White, Argentinean woman once visited a group of Indians in rural Argentina, and she became so excited that she said with a lilting tone, "I felt as if I was born here." She was born again or sanctified through dependent rank. During a recent concert given at London's Royal Albert Hall, the food concession sold ice cream called "New England Ice-cream." We see that England is now "new." Future historians will simply refer to the post 1960s era as AB or "After the Blacks."
Collectivism and a loving imitation of the Blacks are necessary to recreate the body of the Blacks, and to participate in the redeeming action. Or, these virtues are necessary to be assimilated to God. This assimilation was also the goal of history for the Jews and Plato. The name "Tutankhamun" means "The image of Amun," the creator God. King Tut certainly was with it. And Whites today sometimes want to "walk like an Egyptian", or even "turn Japanese". (These are the lyrics contained in two pop songs from a decade or two back.) The imitation of Christ is a common theme in history, which today is played out by the Whites imitating the body language, dress and music of Blacks. This is even more with it. For Whites, behavior, ethics, federal policy, cultural imagery, and emotions that work to achieve this imitation, warm union, submission, and collectivist vision are "progressive." These practices represent the desired goal for life. "Jump over us for college admissions!" the Whites exclaim with joy. Or, "Are you progressive?" the Whites now ask one another. "Come here!" the Whites now call to everyone and everything. What direction is your bowing submission pointed in? It is impossible to praise the Blacks too highly today. Emotion is the primary medium by which Whites achieve redemption, sanctification, and atonement. A White should not "harden his heart" or be "stiff-necked." If so, watch out! The alarm bells start ringing! Any emotional resistance by a White is experienced as dissonance, rebellion, or "regression." "Heretic! Heretic! Heretic!" Leftists start screaming, and, of course, science be damned.
Another example of emotional collectivism is that Whites today, as in the nineteenth century, achieve redemption through Love. So loving and hugging the Trees and the Blacks, and racial integration, are progressive. For instance, recently in Oakland, California, there was a billboard with a picture of a charismatic or macho Black man glaring out over the caption, "How deep is your love?" So the main criterion for judgments and knowledge for the inhabitants of the Oakland/Berkeley area is love, not science. Similarly, when a large social group produced a newsletter, written on the cover in a large font was the phrase, "One World, One Heart." So policy today is first and foremost prompted by emotional or collectivist considerations. (If I recall correctly, the Buddhists try to cozy up to the universe, so now it is clear that the Left really lacks ambition.)
These traditional notions of religious righteousness and love inspire the Left today to attack some people as a source of pollution: "What! You don't love the Blacks? Grrrrrrrrr!" they threaten with raised arm. "You're still a sinner! Cut off, evil, and dirty!" they scorn. You're not elevated or with it. Notions of religious pollution and anxiety drive the Left. This explains their common reaction of revulsion to science, which secularizes or "pollutes" emotion. We can't get off the right track to sanctification and empowerment. "Can't you see that we're burning you at the stake for your own good? We want to save your soul!" the Left loves to scream. The Left certainly is "moral." As Whites once measured the progress of their souls with reference to Jesus, they now measure the progress of their souls with reference to the Blacks or Trees. "How close or progressive are you?" the Whites commonly ask each other today. As God set the moral standard, now the Trees and the Blacks set the moral standard. So the Whites with great urgency keep one ear pressed hard against the Trees and the Blacks, so they will always know what the dominants want. Whites have to stay "with it" to always know right from wrong. Hence, the interests of the Blacks dominate, and any knowledge that contradicts this is automatically dismissed, if not viewed as heresy. The traditional definition of heresy was treason against God,[8] hence the firm devotion of the Whites to the Blacks on all issues.
Among chimps, dominance and submission are expressed in part by patterns of attention and anxiety. So, relative to the interests of the Blacks and the Trees, if a White does not love or have the proper pattern of respect, attention, anxiety, and deference, the Leftist will scream, "You traitor! You don't have a just fear of the Blacks! Whose side are you on?!" If a White is dismissive, and simply laughs at the subject of the Blacks or Trees, watch out! Among seventeenth-century Dutch artists, the mocking of Christ was a popular theme. This impulse today explains why the Left fixates on a researcher's "motive," an irrelevant issue when assessing evidence. Firm allegiance and respect are central to the Left. A White can't hug the bull too tightly.
The Left is basically a species of fascism, or at least it draws on fascist psychology. In a republic, the state is a forum for discussion and experiment. No one gets too attached to any policy or idea, because new evidence may suddenly appear. Under fascism, the state and the leader are objects of worship or veneration, and beyond doubt. Like a fascist dictator, the left today demands unswerving allegiance.
This idea of allegiance is very old and can be seen in the medieval comitatus, or pagan Germanic warrior band hierarchy. For instance, in one of the Icelandic Sagas, a warrior is imprisoned with his king, and although the warrior is given the opportunity to leave the prison, he "swore that he would on no account leave that place alive, unless King Svein was also freed with all his men."[9]
There was the same ethic of allegiance or devotion for the battlefield. Anthony Bartlett describes how Christianization resulted in displacing this fanatical warrior service on to Jesus.[10] This form of zeal prompted the subsequent internal "war" against sin, and moral severity.
Leftists today demonstrate this heroic devotion, which is also described in fiction. For instance, in the film Legally Blond II (2003) Reese Witherspoon swears to commit her life to passing federal legislation that will free a favorite dog from "prison." She's chained herself to the prison. In the film Tears In The Sun (2003), a U.S. military unit can't bring itself to abandon a destitute African people, and so it goes back to help rescue them. In an episode of Friends, Phoebe, Ms New Age, throws herself in front of a dart gun aimed at a monkey. In another episode, she hysterically stops Joey from putting a dead Christmas tree into a wood chipper. In the series in general, it is made clear that these types of actions from Phoebe express a form of devotion that is integral to her fanatical personality. King Svien would have been proud and empowering for Phoebe. Christianity has been described as a "rescue religion." This motivation in the left was shown by a statement by Susan Sontag regarding her concerns during the 1960s: "During the last years Vietnam has been stationed inside my consciousness as a quintessential image of the suffering and heroism of the "weak." But it was really American "the strong" that obsessed me-the contours of American power, of American cruelty, of American self-righteousness."[11]
So it is clear from these examples in the popular media and from Susan Sontag that the Left represents regression to a warrior band following its strong, and weak, leader to earthly power or "salvation." There is no shortage of the heroic spirit among Leftists. It is only a matter of who among the Left comes out on top during the pursuit of existential and academic kudos. More on this topic of competition later.
In the religion of macho, if a Leftist has a choice between science or closeness with a Victim, he will always choose the appeasement of or the assimilation to macho. "Jump over me!" he cries with joy. Or, "I'm a fool for God!" the Leftists proudly exclaim. The Jews and St. Paul make the same distinction and preference, and romanticize ignorance. Around the universities today, on the subject of the Blacks, one can't be too big a fool. In fact, the more outrageous the theory that one believes, the more one's fevered devotion is demonstrated. We shall review one such supernatural theory. Recently, a Black man said during a speech that genetic engineering by Whites causes Blacks to be negligent parents. The Whites love this! So they start nodding in agreement, as this is a plum opportunity to demonstrate the depths of their idiotic devotion to the Blacks. "I agree! I'm a fool for the Blacks!" and everyone else is so impressed by this amazing display of piety. Boy, is he with it! One high-ranking Leftist journalist said, "It's okay to lie for a good cause." Now, you want to be "okay," don't you? So, like the fascists, they attack those who prefer knowledge or science. The hubris before God! Whites want to be "locked up" with the big boss, regardless of the costs. Nothing should get in the way of the subordination to the "positive vibrations" or the charismatic macho with the raised arm. (You can just imagine the crowds swooning before Hitler.) At this point, the Whites have given up both their minds and emotional/cultural sovereignty. They have achieved proper subordination and slavery. But they feel safe. A sign that the Whites feel like slaves is their apathy in response to the threat from non-Whites. In India, the people worship cows, and so people let cows wander around the cities. Similarly, in the West, Whites worship Blacks, so the Whites let the Blacks wander around their cities. With the Blacks and Trees as sources of salvation, the Left is emphatic that union with them will enable the Whites to conquer death. For instance, in the film Ghost (1990), the ghost of a White person is resurrected in the body of a Black person. This investment explains why the Left believes that the life of the universe hinges on the Whites' attitude to the Blacks. It should be emphasized here that the theme of anxiety as a response to the specter of death is very common in the primary sources from antiquity. So we should not be surprised that this powerful emotion is handled today as in the very recent past. The Whites just can't stop dancing around the suffering and dying Blacks. Regarding moral and physical regeneration through the Blacks, this exciting, unifying, and collectivist moral impulse inspires affirmative action, "social promotion," and a juxtaposing and blending of images and values-better known, in popular and high culture, as multiculturalism. Connection imagery-"We're all together!" "Spanglish!" and "EarthLink!"-is very common in pop culture and advertising. And this impulse to connection explains why collectivism, for Leftists, is an automatic good, the solution to all problems and beyond criticism. This is a fundamental "wisdom" in academia.
This unity is necessary to get things vibrating or empowered, like a bull. For instance, at San Francisco State University, there is a mural, positioned high on a wall, that has a large picture of Africa, and inside Africa, a smaller picture of the United States. If this isn't atonement with African vibrations, I don't know what is! It should be noted that there are very few Blacks in San Francisco, but many Chinese. But because the Chinese don't swagger, there is no picture of China on any wall on campus. This use of elevated imagery is not a new idea. An early Christian theologian once had a vision of the outline of a new Israel descending. Similarly, it is common for university professors, while lecturing, to be suddenly gripped by the vision of an outline of a newly redeemed America descending. "I see the future! And everyone's there!" they intone with righteousness. In fact, it is hard to get a Leftist to stop having visions of redemption and atonement. These impulses simply get them through the day. The anxiety! And the long, impassioned meetings! So inspired are they that many feel compelled to pursue entire courses of study and even professions whose goals are to expose divisive sin: lives devoted to redemption and sanctification, like Mother Teresa's. They're so conscientious! And it's hard for them to keep their arms down. They're so with it!These values of intimacy with and love for the Victims inspire a competition among Whites. "So how close are you to the Blacks or Trees?" or "How thick are your chains?" the Whites always ask one another. The more battle scars that a White can produce, the more he or she impresses others and rises in the divine hierarchy. "Forward Christian soldiers!" is what the twenty-year-olds scream around the universities today. The pursuit of kudos now achieves heroic proportions on campus.
As we saw in the mural, the juxtaposing and blending of images in multiculturalism are done to instantiate the values and to act as a transitional phase to a new unity or a new vision of salvation and power for now and the future. We shall present two parallel examples of this use of imagery, one from the Middle Ages and the other contemporary. During the Christian conversion process of the pagan Germanic peoples, icons were created with Thor on one side and Christ on the other. This is an example of juxtaposition. At that time, there was also a blending of pagan and Christian religious ideas and imagery. So we see brought together, as a transitional device, the old and new visions of appeasement, atonement, and empowerment.
Similarly today, on the sit-com Friends, there are juxtaposed and blended symbolic narratives and values that point to a better future. For instance, juxtaposition occurs when the middle-class values of the main plot are contrasted with the modern or politically correct (PC) theme of the subplot. Often the subplots have strong interracial contact, homosexual relations, free love, and contact with the underclass and criminals (positive vibrations?). In one episode, Monica is actually excited to be in a sustained friendship with a woman who stole her credit card. In addition, her excitement is so great that she describes the friendship in terms of rebirth. And, in the television series in general, a blending of values occurs when the main characters indulge in homoerotic innuendo among themselves. It should be noted that PC subplots are becoming more common in feature films, such as Possession (2002), which has a lesbian love affair. We have seen that, today, the Blacks, thieves, and gays are the powers that the heterosexual Whites have to appease and be reconciled with. Of course, the Blacks and gays are always justified to be angry and to raise their arms. And the hetero Whites are morally obligated to cower and defer to their anger. "You're right!" they have to exclaim, or "We're such fools!" In another episode of Friends, Monica and Rachel are at a hospital, and they keep making mistakes as they fill out the admissions forms. They then repeatedly describe how stupid they are while standing in front of a disdainful Black nurse.
The subplots and blendings are experienced by viewers as a joyous celebration of redemption or moral reform, and as a relief from the slightly suffocating main plots of relations between heterosexual White professionals. Entrapment, claustrophobia, and death were common images among Christians to describe sin, the falling away from Jesus. An example of this Leftist moral reaction came from a Canadian journalist. Regarding the start of Canada's first integrated TV series, the journalist described it as a "relief".[12]
So, as in the Middle Ages, we see clearly that these subplots and blendings are meant as a transitional phase to a new vision of redemption and atonement through history, and power over death: what a relief! Canada's finally with it!
Leftists have both civic and personal anxieties clustered around or resolved through the Trees and the Blacks. (This sounds like totemism.) So when a Viking and a Berkeley professor put away their swords and view their respective icons, they both think, "The old is okay, but the new is much better." And, of course, they both feel a deep impulse to legislate what is progressive. So out come the swords again. (I have heard that there are new things going on at Berkeley, but that this trend is the Neolithic will certainly warm Darwin's heart and get everyone else on campus vibrating!)
We have seen how people's projected respect and disrespect, in a theological context, create a fundamental moral and political force field. In collective life in general, people express a range of emotions to one another, from neutrality to gently positive support. Extremes of support or disrespect are rare and risky. Disrespect has to be carefully sanctioned to not invite physical retaliation. And even extreme support has to be given carefully to avoid the impression of parody-and hence, of disrespect. (We have seen how important this psychology is to creating criminal scenarios.) This is the basic human psychology underlying Leftist ethics and politics. For both the Left and fascists, the issue is esteem and tangible power, not knowledge. Of course, science has tried to break this emotional habit with notions of academic tolerance and freedom, but so far with only limited success.
Fundamentally, the New Left is comprised of particular patterns of affirmative and negative emotions, respect, and disrespect, which are intellectually justified to promote atonement. Hence, all of their ideas can be reduced to these emotions and their interrelations. Leftists, and humans in general, can immediately sense when a series of ideas has an ethical implication that runs contrary to their own pattern of esteem. This situation explains why there are no rational standards for knowledge among the Left, because what matters are one's attitudes, not ideas. The Whites will believe any theory that results in their cowering humiliation. "We're so evil!" the Whites need to hear today to enforce their slavery. This is what drives academia or creates its "ethical" and conceptual standards. For instance, there is an organization called "progressive sociologists," which viciously attacked a scholarly book on the biological differences between the races. The organization was so effective in threatening the academic publisher that it dropped the book.
